2002 - 2003 January 2003 - Passed beyond the depths is finally completed just intime for Sorrell to get his cast off and begin working on a physical therapy regimen that will allow him to start playing soon. Eric Hernandez begins setting his drum tones and dynamics so he can start to lay the drum parts for "Shadows". December 2002 - The band takes a month long break, putting rehearsals on the shelf to welcome in the holiday season and spend time with their families. Sorrell and Koelling hook up in he studios to begin recording a new version of "Passed beyond the Depths" from Diary of a Lost Soul, which will be released to the fan club members upon it's finishing. November 2002 - Sorrell and Koelling somehow find a way to work around the physical obstacles, and the potential new line up gets together for a rehearsal. After a single hour of playing with him, the band officially hires Eric Hernandez as their drummer of the future. October 2002 - After making a very promising hook up with a possible drummer, Sorrell and Koelling meet with Eric Hernandez, a seasoned musician who is currently playing as the back up drummer for a Sacramento-based Rush tribute band. The meeting results in the desire to audition Eric in any way they can, so Sorrell and Koelling make it a point to see him perform with his current band, and are more than happy with the results. September 2002 - After auditioning two other drummers, the band falls victim to yet another mishap when Steve Sorrell breaks his right arm, thwarting their attempts to fill the open position. August 2002 - The band plays another live gig with an auditioning drummer at a small party including a one hour jazz-fusion-like jam session. Steve Koelling breaks the pinky finger on his right hand causing the band to take a much needed break and put their efforts towards, not only the new songs, but looking for a new drummer that will fit the band both musically and personally. July 2002 - After various differences with drummer Eric Strand, both parties agree that it would benefit the band if they parted ways. The band plays another live show at Harry's Sports Bar and say goodbye to Eric. Sorrell and Koelling continue to write new material for "Shadows" June 2002 - The band plays two successful live shows in Fairfield California at the Rockville Inn and Harry's Sports Bar. They also introduce a short version of "With these hands", scheduled to be the first song off the next album. Realizing the need for a group effort to help plan the storyline, plot, and organization of "Shadows", Sorrell and Koelling gather the personnel that will best suit the positions to assist them, and the Shadow Crew is born. May 2002 - a tentative performance date is set for June 1st, but is later cancelled. April 2002 - Steve Koelling and Steve Sorrell begin writing the new material for Shadows of the Past. March 2002 - The band officially hires Eric Strand on drums and Donovan Francis on bass and begins rehearsing weekly. February 2002 - Paul Lamb leaves the band to fruther concentrate on his career as an engineer and producer. January 2002 - The band goes into Route 44 Studios and begins recording singles version of "Past Beyond the Depths" and "Too Late" with drummer Tim Bailey.
